What you'll build
By the end of this guide, every field on your form will have a field ID, without you typing a single one. You'll know the three places Formaloo lets you generate IDs: a Generate icon inside a single field's settings, a Generate missing IDs option in the AI menu for the whole form, and a Generate IDs button in Connect your UI for forms you're handing to a developer or an AI coding agent.
Fields created with Magic Create, Magic Import, or MCP already get an ID automatically. Fields you add by hand don't. Generating IDs fills that gap, and only that gap: a field that already has an ID is never touched.
When to use this
You built a form field by field and now want to use answer piping in emails, PDFs, or the ending page
You're about to connect a custom front end with Connect your UI and the panel says a field is missing an ID
You want Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor to work with a form through Formaloo MCP, and the form was built by hand
You want to use CC Formaloo with a form you created manually
You added a handful of new fields to an older form and don't want to name each one yourself
Why field IDs matter
A field ID is a short, readable name for a field, written with letters, numbers, and underscores. Formaloo uses it anywhere something needs to point at one specific field.
Answer piping: the
@menu inserts a field's ID into your ending page, emails, and PDFs.Connect your UI: a custom front end sends each answer to Formaloo using the field's ID.
đĄ Want to pull a submitter's own answers into later questions, emails, or PDFs? How to use answer piping in Formaloo is the foundational guide to how Formaloo passes data using @field_id variables.
Generate an ID for a single field
Use this when you only need an ID on one field, for example the one field you want to pipe into an ending page.
đĄ Want a fully-built form in seconds instead of dragging fields one by one? How to create any form with AI using Magic Create in Formaloo builds your form, fields, and field IDs from a plain-language prompt.
1. Open the field: In the form editor, click the field you want to give an ID.
2. Find the Field ID section: In the field's settings, scroll to the Field ID section. If the field has no ID yet, you'll see a Generate icon instead of an empty input.
3. Click the Generate icon: Formaloo creates an ID for this field only and fills it in. The icon is replaced by the normal editable Field ID input, the same one every field with an ID shows.
4. Edit the ID if you want to: Click into the input and type your own ID. Generated IDs are a starting point, not a lock.
5. Save your form: Click Save in the island bar at the top of the editor.
â ď¸ If you rename a field ID after you've used it in an ending page, email template, or PDF template, update it there too. Otherwise piping breaks.
Generate IDs for every field at once with the AI menu
Use this when you've built a whole form by hand and want every field covered in one click.
1. Open the AI menu: In the island bar at the top of the form editor, open the AI menu.
2. Click Generate missing IDs: Formaloo scans the whole form and creates an ID for every field and variable that doesn't have one. Anything that already has an ID is skipped.
3. Review the results: Click through a few fields and check their Field ID sections. Rename any you'd like to be more specific.
4. Save your form: Click Save in the island bar. This step is required. Generate missing IDs changes your form in the editor, but it does not save for you, so the new IDs aren't kept until you save.
If every field already has an ID, there's nothing to generate. Formaloo lets you know and changes nothing, so running it twice in a row is safe.
Generate IDs from Connect your UI
Use this when you're connecting your own front end and the panel tells you some fields are missing IDs. Connect your UI is the tab next to Link and Embed in the Share panel.
đ Not sure what Connect your UI does yet? See how to connect Formaloo to any form design you build. For a refresher on the Share panel itself, see how to find, customize & share your form's public URL.
1. Open Connect your UI: Open your form in the editor, click Share in the top toolbar, then click the Connect your UI tab.
2. Read the notice: If any fields have no ID, a yellow notice lists each one by name.
3. Click Generate IDs: Formaloo creates an ID for every field listed in the notice, in one action.
4. Confirm the notice has cleared: Once every listed field has an ID, the notice updates and you'll see "All fields have an ID. You're ready to connect."
5. Copy your instructions: Click Copy instructions and hand them to your developer or AI coding agent, as covered in the Connect your UI guide.
Note: Unlike the AI menu, Generate IDs in Connect your UI saves and publishes automatically. You don't click Save afterward, and the change goes live as soon as you click the button. Only click it when you're ready for those IDs to be live on your form.
Which option should you use
Where | What it covers | Do you need to save afterward? |
Generate icon in a field's settings | That one field | Yes, click Save |
Generate missing IDs in the AI menu | Every field and variable on the form | Yes, click Save |
Generate IDs in Connect your UI | Every field listed in the missing-ID notice | No, it saves and publishes automatically |
How generated IDs behave
These rules are the same in all three places.
Existing IDs are never changed. Generation only fills gaps, so any
@field_idyou've already piped into an email, PDF, or ending page keeps working.IDs are built from the field's title. A field titled "Full name" gets an ID based on those words, written in the same letters-and-underscores style as every other ID.
Every ID is unique within the form. Formaloo uses the same uniqueness check as Magic Create, Magic Import, and MCP, so two fields never end up with the same ID.
IDs aren't created automatically when you add a field. Generating is always something you choose to do, from one of the three places above.
You can edit any generated ID later. Changing one works exactly like changing an ID you typed yourself.
What you now have
Every field on your form has an ID, and you didn't have to name them one at a time. Answer piping, Connect your UI, CC Formaloo, and MCP can all point at your fields from this moment on. Because existing IDs are never overwritten, you can run any of the three options on a form that's already in use without breaking the piping and templates you've already built.
