How to change a field type in your form

Learn how to change existing field types in Formaloo without deleting and recreating the field manually.

Why change a field type?

Sometimes a field may be created with the wrong type.

For example:

  • Text field that should have been an Email field

  • Number field that should have been a Dropdown

  • Dropdown that should have been a Single Choice field

Instead of rebuilding the field from scratch, you can now update the field type directly from the form editor.

⚠️ Before changing a field type

Changing a field type may permanently remove previously collected answers for that field. This can happen when existing responses no longer match the new field type after conversion.

To keep a backup of your current submission data just in case, we strongly recommend exporting your responses before continuing:

Formaloo will generate an export file that will other be downloaded automatically or sent to the workspace owner email address (true for heavier projects with a large number of submissions).

⚠️ If your form already contains important submissions and you want to avoid risking existing data, consider:

  • Making the old field invisible or admin-only

  • Creating a brand new field of the new required type

How to change a field type

1. Open your form editor,

2. Click on the field you want to update,

3. Click the Field type dropdown at the top of the field settings:

4. Select the new field type you want to use,

5. Once selected, a warning pop-up will appear asking you to confirm the change,

6. If you continue, the field will immediately convert into the new type:

ℹ️ Changing a field type only affects the selected field. Other fields and their responses in your form remain unchanged.

What happens after changing the field type?

After conversion, the field behaves exactly like a normal field of the new type.

You can still:

  • Edit the field

  • Move it

  • Resize it

  • Delete it

  • Update its settings normally

Which field settings stay the same?

To help avoid rebuilding your field from scratch, Formaloo keeps many existing field settings during the conversion whenever possible.

This may include:

  • Field title

  • Description

  • Field ID

  • Field width

  • Required status

  • Default value

  • Existing choices

For example:

If you change a Dropdown field into a Single Choice field, the existing options may stay automatically instead of needing to be recreated.

Some settings may still reset if the new field type does not support them.

💡 If you're making structural changes to a live form, it’s usually safer to duplicate the form first or export your responses before editing field types.

Final result

You can now quickly fix incorrect field setups without deleting and recreating fields manually.

Instead of rebuilding fields, reconfiguring settings, and adjusting layouts again, you can simply convert the existing field into the type you need directly from the form editor.

This makes it much easier to refine and update your forms over time, especially while testing workflows, improving user experience, or adjusting live forms as your process.
